Dr Reninger graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Finance and Economics. Medicine was always a calling, particularly cancer treatment and research due to the exciting scientific advances and a familial connection. His physician father suggested he pursue other interests before deciding on a medical career. While work in the financial sector was exciting and challenging, he quickly realized that medicine was where he needed to dedicate his life. He completed post-baccalaureate work in the sciences and was awarded a Naval Scholarship to attend medical school. After medical school and residency at Drexel College of Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, he served as a general internist at the Pensacola Naval Hospital in Florida. From there he was selected for further specialized training in a Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship at the University of Florida. He then received orders to relocate to the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia, where he spent the next 6 + years serving his country, eventually obtaining the rank of Commander. While in Portsmouth, he was actively involved in resident education, development of chemotherapy protocols, creation of a dedicated oncology ward, developing an oncology clinical trials program, and worked closely with the surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists and radiologists as part of a multidisciplinary cancer care team. He was eventually named the Division Head of Hematology and Oncology. For his \"outstanding clinical acumen\", \"superb mentoring\", providing \"cutting edge education\", \"streamlining the multidisciplinary care to provide the best possible patient care...managerial ability, personal initiative, and loyal devotion to duty...in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service\" he was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for meritorious service.
