Brief Intro

Dr. Mango is a graduate of St. John's University and New York Medical College. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the Upstate Medical Center here in Syracuse in 1970. He followed this with a fellowship in retinal diseases and surgery at the University of California in San Francisco. When Doctors McGraw, Frank, and Spitzer asked him to join their practice, Eye Consultants was formed in 1971. Dr. Mango has been in the practice of retina and vitreous for 40+ years. He has been quite active in the teaching program at the Department of Ophthalmology here in Syracuse. He has served as both the Director of Retinal Services at SUNY Upstate Medical University, and also Retinal Services at the Syracuse Veteran's Administration Hospital. Dr. Mango enjoys spending his free time with his children and grandchildren. In addition to working in his active Retinal Practice, he has developed an ecology project in the Peruvian Amazon Jungle with Cornell and other Universities. The Amazon facility allows students the opportunity to study the flora and fauna of the Amazon Jungle. In conjunction with the laboratory facility for the study of ecology, he has also developed two botanical gardens in the area, both of which deal with the medicinal plants of the Amazon Basin. Additionally, he is also working to rehabilitate and rescue both aquatic animals as well as other terrestrial animals. The animals are rescued and rehabilitated and then released along the reserve that has been established around the lodge in the Amazon jungle. Dr. Mango is also working to establish an alliance between Upstate Medical School and Iquitos Medical School to bring medical students from the United States in tropical disease medical elective.
