Dr Rutherford earned his MD at Otago University Medical School and completed his residency training at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine and Mayo Foundation for Cardiovascular Diseases. Dr Barry Rutherford's research interests include development of techniques for direct balloon angioplasty in acute myocardial infarction and multiple vessel angioplasties with Dr Geoffrey Hartzler and Dr MCConahay. Currently, his main interest is in the development of new techniques for chronic total occlusion of coronary arteries and new techniques for management of acute myocardial infarction. Prior to his current position Dr Rutherford was Consulting Cardiologist - Mayo Clinic, and Director of the coronary care unit where he initiated research into pulmonary artery pressure during AMI and computer assisted patient records in the intensive care unit.
