Andrea Ferrara, MD, FACS, FASCRS, is board certified by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery as well as the American Board of Surgery. He is a member of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Specialty Section at MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando and program director for the Colon and Rectal Residency Program at Orlando Health.
Dr. Ferrara received his medical degree from the University of Rome Medical School in Italy. He did his internship at State University Hospital in Policlinico Umberto, Rome, and he completed his residency in general surgery at State University of New York, Kings County Hospital Center, Brooklyn, New York. He completed a surgery research fellowship at Yale University, followed by a two year colon and rectal surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Ferrara serves as program director for the Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship Program for the graduate medical education at Orlando Health, as well as vice chairman of the department of general surgery. He has published articles in many well-known journals and has contributed book chapters to print publications. He has also presented at several national and international meetings, including the World Congress of Coloproctology and Pelvic Diseases, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Annual Meeting and the International Rectal Cancer Conference.
Dr. Ferrara's special interests include evaluation and treatment of fecal incontinence and chronic constipation, sphincter saving techniques for rectal cancer and laparoscopic techniques for colon and rectal pathology. He serves as a clinical associate professor for the department of clinical sciences at Florida State University College of Medicine, a clinical associate at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine and an assistant professor of surgery at the University of South Florida College of Medicine.
He is a fellow member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons as well as the American College of Surgeons.
