Alan Gurd, MD, FRCS, was born in Ireland where he was educated at the Methodist College in Belfast. In 1958, he entered Queen's University of Belfast's Medical School where he graduated in 1964. After becoming a doctor he then trained as a general surgeon, receiving his FRCS in Edinburgh in 1967. At that time, he began orthopaedic training in Belfast followed by a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. Concurrently he received a MCh for a thesis on 'Fat Embolism' in 1969. After 2 years on the Staff of Belfast's teaching hospital, the Royal Victoria Hospital, he and his family immigrated to the United States in 1976 where he became Head of Pediatric Orthopaedics at Cleveland Clinic, where his wife is also employed as a Pediatrician.
