With his interest sparked as a Boy Scout learning first aid, Alan E. Thomas, MD, FAAP, became deeply interested in medicine as a volunteer with the Chatham United Methodist Youth Fellowship program, working in the Morristown Memorial Hospital Recovery Room, and as a Chatham Emergency Squad emergency medical technician (EMT).
Dr. Thomas's guiding philosophy is, "Listen carefully to parents and patients! They'll tell you what's wrong." He adds, "I'm focused on safety. I would never give my patients any medication, vaccine, or advice that I wouldn't give to my children."
A native of Chatham, New Jersey, Dr. Thomas has been a patient of the Summit Medical Group his entire life. He says, "My children are now the fourth generation in my family to call Summit Medical Group home for their health care. It's an honor and pleasure to serve the community in which I was raised."
In 2010, Dr. Thomas was among only 13 pediatricians in the state nominated by his fellow physicians for New Jersey Monthly's "Top Doctors" list. In 2009, his patients and their parents named him for New Jersey Family magazine's "NJ's Favorite Kids' Docs."
Dr. Thomas is fluent in Spanish.
